a053t.jpgDESCRIPTION: These three tintypes are very old examples of the beginning of photography. Antique tintypes are rarely in pristine condition. Their "flaws" contribute to making them so very special and fascinating. Expected characteristics may include: varnish crackling, scuffed/chipped/peeling areas, bends, uneven or crooked cut edges, smears or fingerprints around edges from handling before the varnish sealer had dried.

a199t.jpgDESCRIPTION: Daguerreotype of five women (probable Pennock family members) in leather case with gold frame, red velvet lining, ca. mid 1800s. Daguerreotypes are on polished silver so they are very reflective, like a mirror. Since they are on silver and subject to tarnish, daguerreotypes were put behind glass and sealed with paper tape so air could not tarnish the plate (there often is some tarnish around the edges of the picture). This was then put into a small hinged case, similar to a woman's compact.

a228t.jpgDESCRIPTION: Daguerreotype by S. Broadbent that features Joseph Pennock. The leather bound case has came apart but is there. Samuel Broadbent (1810-1880) began his career as a portrait painter and miniaturist in Hartford, Connecticut while in his teens, following in the footsteps of his father who was an artist as well as a physician. Friend and distant relative Samuel Morse introduced Broadbent to daguerreotyping in 1840 and throughout the 1840s Broadbent traveled around the southern United States as an itinerant daguerreotypist visiting many of the same locations where he had worked as a portrait painter and miniaturist. He is known to have had daguerreotype studios in different cities in Georgia; North and South Carolina; Baltimore, Maryland; and Wilmington, Delaware before settling in Philadelphia in 1851 where he worked for the next nearly thirty years

a248t.jpgDESCRIPTION: Taylor's Premium Gallery cabinet card of a little boy dressed in his Sunday best, ca. 1866-1895. Photos were placed on thick card paper so the photo would not curl up. Mostly displayed on a shelf or cabinet. In a velvet frame. Photographer Thomas W. Taylor (1838-1904) is described by the Chester County Historical Society as operating one of the most prominent studios in West Chester. His photography career was interrupted by the Civil War. Taylor joined Company E of the 124th Regiment of Pennsylvania Volunteers. He fought at Chancellorsville and Antietam. He entered the Union army as a private and mustered out as a corporal. He reopened his studio for business in 1863 and worked into the 1890s.
