a041t.jpgDESCRIPTION: Frans Hals: The Complete Works by Claus Grimm, translated from the German by Jurgen Riehle. Happy N. Abrams Inc. publ., c. 1990. Unstated FIRST EDITION. Nimble brushstrokes, concise psychological characterizations and the ease of his compositions have earned the Haarlem master a reputation as a forerunner of the impressionists. Grimm, a scholar who has spent 25 years studying Hals's work, is even more specific. His interpretations supported by 471 plates, one-third in color, he calls Hals a direct precursor of Manet in his ability to create compositions of simple, striking silhouettes of figures. He also claims that Hals anticipated Cezanne in his relaxed, individualistic touches and his dissection of faces into mosaics.

a188t.jpgDESCRIPTION: Blessed by Light: Visions of the Colorado Plateau, edited by Stephen Trimble, Gibbs M. Smith publ. c. 1986. "The images in this book of photographs are selected with care and precision, each one popping off the page with its own message. This is not a book of cliche' photographs to be looked at once and set aside, but a book which can be a new experience each time it is opened. Light is the common thread of the book-glorious and subtle light. But the book's highest redeeming quality could possibly be the magical intertwining of prose and image."

a214t.jpgDESCRIPTION: Two paperback art books in original plastic. 1) Lucian Freud Paintings, revised edition, Thames & Hudson publ. With 112 illustrations, 105 in color. It is both startling and disconcerting, producing some of the most powerful and moving visual images to have appeared in the last thirty years. Freud-once dubbed "the Ingres of existentialism"-has almost single-handedly redefined the figurative painting of our time. No other living artist possesses his ability to paint the texture and thinness of skin over flesh, and his distinctive portraits have a haunting quality that makes them impossible to forget. 2) Francis Bacon, the Human Body, An Ahmanson Murphy Fine Arts Book, University of California Press. Francis Bacon (1909-1992) is widely acknowledged as one of the greatest British artists of this century. For over fifty years the intense emotions conveyed in his works have shocked and enthralled an ever-growing audience. David Sylvester, a leading Bacon scholar, brings together many of the artist's best paintings involving the human figure, the central subject of his work. Bacon's diverse body imagery can be seen in his self-portraits; nude studies; portraits of friends such as Henrietta Moraes, George Dyer, and Lucian Freud; and his series of Popes.
